Residual · Joachim Spieth - Vestige

Vestige continues Joachim Spieth’s refined exploration of spatial sound and textural depth. Building on the sonic language developed throughout his recent works – including Retrace – the album expands the dialogue between ambient atmospheres and dub-infused detail. The result is a composition of weightless intensity: a sound that unfolds in motion, inhabiting both vast hall spaces and microscopic frequency shifts. Driven by the question of how much presence can reside within a single, minimal sound particle, Vestige examines the tension between form and dissolution. Layers of resonance emerge and fade, tracing the moment when sound becomes space, and movement turns into stillness. A subtle, restless energy runs through the album – rhythmic elements that seem to move forward even in their restraint, capturing the quiet euphoria of motion itself. Created with precision and restraint, Vestige takes freedom in navigating stylistic boundaries, weaving openness and focus into a coherent whole. It offers a sense of connection rather than separation – a space for listening, perceiving, and re-seeing. Ultimately, Vestige is both reflection and progression – a work that reinterprets familiar traces, allowing them to resonate in a new light while pointing quietly forward. written and produced by Joachim Spieth website | https://affinmusic.de/ design | http://markus-guentner.de/ booking | https://affinmusic.de/booking-joachim... some reflections on the Vestige album find here: https://joachimspieth.substack.com/p/...

Originating in the 1960s and continuing into the ’80s, New German Cinema was an artistic response to the stagnation of the film industry with a revolutionary declaration: “The old cinema is dead. We believe in the new cinema.” Influenced by the vision of the French New Wave, newer generations of filmmakers innovated with relatively less funds at their disposal. Their experiments would change the cinematic medium forever.

www.closeupfilmcentre.jpg

New German Cinema is the solo project of Fear of Men vocalist/songwriter Jess Weiss, taking the shadowy dream pop sound she makes with her band into darker, heavier places with dense electronics and ornate, layered production. The project's debut long-player, Pain Will Polish Me, arrived in 2026.

Weiss co-founded the English band Fear of Men in the early 2010s, singing, playing guitar, and writing several albums worth of material with the band over the course of the decade. Though Fear of Men were still an active band, Weiss began New German Cinema as a vehicle for her solo songs sometime in the early 2020s, releasing the single "I Become Heavy" in 2022. During the next several years, Weiss worked with producer Alex DeGroot (who had previously worked with artists like Zola Jesus and Cate Le Bon) crafting the debut New German Cinema album. That album, Pain Will Polish Me, was released in March of 2026 on the Felte label. Heavy on moody ambient synth pads, skeletal programmed drums, and intricately layered production, Pain Will Polish Me featured Merchandise vocalist Carson Cox on its lead single, "My Mistake."

Hannah Lew - Another Twilight [Official Video]

“One foot out the door / Another in the underworld…”So opens Hannah Lew’s debut, and melancholic opener Time Wasted. Its melancholic, electro-anthem sound will soon become Lew’s signature, bridging the gap between ‘80s new wave pop — OMD, Eurythmics —and modern-day electronica, with funky basslines and catchy, Morse Code-ish, punctuated melodies.

Sunday and Another Twilight — the two lead singles from the self-titled debut— remain some of the genre’s best in a long time, genuinely fresh and exciting while playing to synth-pop’s strengths. There’s a profound liminalism in Lew’s music, approaching sorrow but pulling back at the last minute. It’s the musical equivalent of that gap between twilight and dawn, the soft glow of not-quite-sunlight on the horizon. In my experience, some of the best music there is lies within that niche; Lew doesn’t buck the trend here.

Tracks like Siloed and Replica are straight out of the early new wave playbook, the former especially in that Joy Division or early New Order sound. Move in Silence, meanwhile, explores unmistakably newer ground, echoing the likes of La Roux and Metronomy. It’s one of the standout album tracks, with a pulsing beat as provocative as it is trancey.

The album’s penultimate track (Distance of the Moon) is by far the most sombre tonally, but compelling nonetheless. The record’s finale, the cryptically titled The Clock is more straightforward pop. It’s a tonic to Distance of the Moon’s sobriety; it’s hopeful, a parting of the clouds that lets just a little light in. It’s the ultimate meeting of Lew’s electronica sound and the darker moments of indie rock. It’s a genuinely memorable closer, notoriously big shoes to fill on a first album.

Vaporwave is an aesthetic that emerged in the early 2010s. It combines multiple visual elements: glitch art, corporate imagery, retro-futurism, neon/pastel colors, and Japanese text (especially the katakana syllabary used to phoneticize foreign words). It is reminiscent of cyberpunk, but it isn’t about creating a fictional world but generating artifacts in our own world that produce a feeling of being displaced. The remembrance of past technologies is key: outlines of Helladic imagery mix with ‘90s Dolby and CDDA logos. Imagined futures — drawn from the past — create a sensation of unease, an artificial nostalgia for what never was. Imagined futures of the past create a sensation of familiar unease and artificial or misplaced nostalgia. Artists in this movement took liberties with the aesthetics of the internet’s early days because they were aesthetics which, like so many AOL CDs, were given to us without our asking, promising us so much and delivering us so little. It may have been vacuous even in its own day, but it is our cultural patrimony.

guide-ancient-greek-sculpture.webp

During the Hellenistic and Classical periods, ancient Greek sculpture aimed to depict the human form realistically, but in an idealized and harmonious state. Greek Sculptors studied anatomy and sought to capture physical perfection and inner vitality. They believed that the human body reflected divine beauty, and sculpture was a medium through which to express this belief. Let’s explore how sculpture evolved and highlight some key masterpieces.

And yet it is a false nostalgia, once highlighted by vaporwave, that our emerging technologies threaten to inundate us with. With occasional misses echoing in the uncanny valley, our suggestibility for implanted cultural memories is as strong as our willingness to consent to corporate visions of future utopias. That is part of the original message of vaporwave. In this new iteration, however, things are different. That is partially understandable. Unable to pay exorbitant fees to license a popular song, artists were confined to the underground, where they could more easily avoid attention. They cultivated techniques that could alter songs in ways that would make them harder to identify on the part of licensers. In the process, they stumbled upon a new kind of art. They thought they were safe because they were working with the detritus of a previous age.

detail_diana_versailles_louvre_ma589.webp

The statues were anointed in different ways. In some instances, they were covered in a mixture of waxes and oils through a process known as “ganosis.” In others, they were coated in olive oil as part of a process called “kosmesis,” which was meant to help protect the sculptures from the elements.

The fragrances would have made viewing the statues not only a visual experience, “but also an olfactory one,”

In ancient Greece and Rome, statues not only looked beautiful—they smelled good, too.

Scott Elliott Jenkins is an English musician from Beckenham. He is best known for his 2023 single, "Rave Out", with Turno and Charlotte Plank, which charted at No. 37 on the UK Singles Chart; his 2024 follow-up with Plank, "Green & Gold" with Rudimental and Riko Dan, charted at No. 29. He has also released the collaborative album Pure Bassline 2 with DJ Q and Jamie Duggan, which charted at No. 2 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, and the 2021 studio album Faith in Chaos, which charted at No. 79 on the UK Album Downloads Chart.

Scott Elliott Jenkins is from Beckenham, and attended Langley Park School for Boys and a university in Canterbury. He became interested in electronic music after hearing the works of the Prodigy and Pendulum. When he was fourteen or fifteen, his school won a grant from the government of the United Kingdom to renovate its music department, which it used to order itself iMacs with Logic Pro on them, which prompted Jenkins to develop an interest; he initially made dubstep, drum and bass, rap and trap beats.

He also began DJing aged fifteen, after a tutor came into his school and offered lessons during lunchtimes; he learnt on Serato, as that was what was being advertised in Langley Park at the time, though later switched to using a set of Pioneer CDJ-350s after saving up for a year. His first set was at a parent–teacher conference.

Ipswich-born, Bristol-based D&B vocalist and songwriter Brodie has been shaking up the music scene.

Growing up in the rave from age 3, she’s been studying the genre since knee high with an extensive knowledge of and die-hard passion for the junglist movement and soundsystem culture – already making a huge impression within the underground scene; from invites to the studio by DJ Zinc, Kanine, Wilkinson, Rudimental and Alcemist to nods from Radio 1 (Charlie Tee), KISS FM, Capital Dance and more. Her latest collab ‘Double Vision’ with UK bass don Skepsis out today – a DnB anthem with an M1 rave organ sound (akin to classic 90s house records), alt-pop sensibilities and a hard hitting narrative, it’s a deftly ambiguous track about being under the influence, as Brodie highlights her deep connection with underground rave culture whilst reflecting on a challenging time in her life where seeing “strangers in her kitchen” was not uncommon.

Behind The Lyrics

Speaking about the lyrics for this single Brodie explains…

“Double Vision is definitely a very personal one for me lyrically. I wrote this tune about the time in my life where my mum had moved to Scotland and left me in her house for about 6 months by myself.. and as a 17 year old you can probably imagine the chaos everyday.”

“I would wake up each morning to a huge array of people drinking and doing all sorts 24/7, still on it from the night before. It was an endless cycle. I literally had strangers knocking on my door at all hours of the day begging to come in. Everyday I told myself ‘never again’ but I guess I didn’t listen.”

“I do not recommend hosting the ‘party house’ as this was the most chaotic time of my life but at least it gave me the inspiration to write a tune about it now”

Francesco Gaetano Moliterno, known professionally as Franko Moliterno or Turno, is an English musician from Bedford. After losing his brother to suicide, Turno released a UK top 40 single about men's mental health. His charity single, "What's on Your Mind", was released in 2022. The single "Rave Out" with Charlotte Plank and Skepsis charted at No. 37 on the UK Singles Chart in 2023

Francesco Gaetano "Franko" Moliterno is from Bedford, and had a brother, Fabio, who ran Escobarbers in Bedford town centre and committed suicide in September 2021 following years of poor mental health; both are of Italian descent. In October 2016, he set up a clothing range; its brand name, Time Is Now, was taken from the idea of not waiting until tomorrow to do things. He then released the albums Power and DNA. In February 2022, he released "Melia", a collaboration with free climber George King which had come about after King used Moliterno's "Abyss" in one of his tracks.

To mark one year of Fabio's death, Franko released a single, "What's On Your Mind" on 15 September 2021, which featured SJ Loq, Myleedan, Phizi, and Too Lippy. The song appeared throughout the first episode of the second series of We Are England, a BBC documentary series, which had been filmed after the gym and mental health charity Samsons Academy approached the BBC wanting to make a documentary about male suicide, and involved the remaining Moliternos; originally intended for broadcast the day after release, the death of Queen Elizabeth II meant that schedules were scrambled, and the programme actually aired three weeks later. A drum and bass remix of the song was released on 10 October 2022, that year's World Mental Health Day; profits from both versions went to Mind, a mental health charity.

In October 2022, Moliterno organised a mental health seminar with the record label DnB Allstars, and in December 2022, Moliterno organised a writer's camp with Ultra Records, which took place the following month; during this week, he recorded 22 tracks, the first of which was "Rave Out", which featured Skepsis and Charlotte Plank and discussed men's mental health. The track came out in June 2023, by which time Moliterno's "Killer" had charted at No. 94 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart; upon release, "Rave Out" charted at No. 37 on the UK Singles Chart.

My music Is from the land of the Elves. I have made a whole world with characters and animation and art. You can look up Aether Elf on Instagram to see it all together. I like to focus on nature — I love that such an advanced technology can have nature essence embedded into it. I also like the strange sounds that go well with my psychedelic art and animation. I love all forms of creativity, I think AI art and music has it’s own place in the world. It is in it’s own little quirky bubble of madness that can never be compared to traditional art and music. It is another fun avenue and tool to express yourself with. I have so many ideas in a day and it really helps me get my ideas out quickly. I love to be able to move on to new ideas faster while completing old ones, it suits me well. With traditional art I had too many unfinished projects because new ideas were more exciting to me — this way I can get ideas done quicker and move on, so my production levels are better and much higher. However, I have been missing electronic music making lately and got a hankering to paint again, so I will no doubt go in between projects if I feel the inspiration. I do not like to put myself in any box. I love nature, being in a forest is where I’m happiest and I love to mix AI high technology with elements of nature. I think we have to keep grounded and have balance. Being in the forest helps a lot. Nature is medicine and I like to promote this concept often because it’s important for everyone. Foraging and plant medicine should be common knowledge, but they’re not. We can eat for free from the land. We can heal ourselves from the land and I feel like nature is true medicine for the soul. I think it’s quite a contrast promoting nature through AI, but that’s the Aether Elf mission.
