Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, to Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland. Born Lesane Parish Crooks, at age one he was renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur. He was named after Túpac Amaru II, a descendant of the last Inca ruler, who was executed in Peru in 1781 after his revolt against Spanish rule. Shakur's mother Afeni Shakur explained, "I wanted him to have the name of revolutionary, indigenous people in the world. I wanted him to know he was part of a world culture and not just from a neighborhood." Tupac's surname came from Lumumba Shakur, a Sunni Muslim, whom his mother married in November 1968. Their marriage fell apart when it was discovered that Lumumba was not Tupac's biological father.

Shakur's parents, Afeni Shakur—born Alice Faye Williams (January 10, 1947 – May 2, 2016) in North Carolina—and his biological father, William "Billy" Garland (born March 14, 1949), had been active Black Panther Party members in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A month before Shakur's birth, his mother was tried in New York City as part of the Panther 21 criminal trial. She was acquitted of over 150 charges.

Other family members who were involved in the Black Panthers' Black Liberation Army were convicted of serious crimes and imprisoned, including Shakur's stepfather, Mutulu Shakur, who spent four years as one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. Mutulu was apprehended in 1986 and subsequently convicted for a 1981 robbery of a Brinks armored truck, during which police officers and a guard were killed. Shakur's godfather, Elmer "Geronimo" Pratt, a high-ranking Black Panther, was wrongly convicted of murdering a schoolteacher during a 1968 robbery. After he spent 27 years in prison, his conviction was overturned due to the prosecution's having concealed evidence that proved his innocence. Shakur's godmother, Assata Shakur, was a former member of the Black Liberation Army who was convicted in 1977 of the first-degree murder of a New Jersey State Trooper. She escaped from prison in 1979 and was on the FBI Most Wanted Terrorists list in 2013, and would remain on the list up until her death in 2025.

Earl Simmons was born on December 18, 1970, in Mount Vernon, New York. He was the son of 19-year-old Arnett Simmons and 18-year-old Joe Barker. Simmons was the middle child of the family; his mother had given birth to a daughter two years prior, later gave birth to a second daughter, and two stillborn sons. His father, Barker, painted watercolor paintings of street scenes to sell at local fairs, having moved to Philadelphia to fulfill his career.

In his childhood years, Simmons first experienced physical violence from his mother, and was diagnosed with bronchial asthma. He was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. He disassociated himself from the spirituality after he was injured in an accident by a driver. At the age of five, his mother sent him to live with relatives in Yonkers' School Street housing apartments. After suffering from his mother's abuse, he was expelled from a middle school at the age of ten, having been sent to a group home. He then returned to Yonkers at age fifteen, sleeping in empty storage bins and befriending stray dogs. Due to poor grades at Yonkers Middle High School, Simmons was unable to finish his track and field team schedule. Broke, he robbed several students to find food and clothing for himself, as well as a leather collar and harness for his pet dog. He then began carjacking. On the morning of April 9, 2021, Simmons lost functionality in multiple essential organs, reportedly his liver, kidneys, and lungs, and died shortly after, at age 50. It was revealed on July 8 by the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office that Simmons's official cause of death was a heart attack. He is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers

Eric Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright on September 7, 1964, in Compton, California, a middle-class Los Angeles suburb that was experiencing blockbusting. His father was a postal worker and his mother was a grade-school administrator. His family and others witnessed the rapid shift downward of their community, caused by several factors including white flight, the nearby Watts Riots, and the formation and expansion of street gangs, most notably, the Crips and Bloods. Wright attended Compton High School but dropped out in the tenth grade. He later received a general equivalency diploma (GED).

Wright supported himself mainly by selling drugs, and introduced his cousin to the illicit occupation. Wright's music manager Jerry Heller recalls seeing Wright selling marijuana, but not cocaine. Heller would claim that Wright's "dope dealer" label was part of his "self-forged armor". Wright was also labeled as a "thug". Heller explains: "The hood where he grew up was a dangerous place. He was a small guy. 'Thug' was a role that was widely understood on the street; it gave you a certain level of protection in the sense that people hesitated to fuck with you. Likewise, 'dope dealer' was a role that accorded you certain privileges and respect." In a 2006 interview with the Associated Press, Heller stated that he had "no proof that he was ever a drug dealer. I'm not sure if he was or wasn't. I know that it was good for the Ruthless image, the Ruthless persona, so maybe that's why he adopted that".

In 1986, at age 22, Wright had allegedly earned as much as US$250,000 from dealing drugs. However, after his cousin was shot and killed, he decided that he could make a better living in the Los Angeles hip hop scene, which was growing rapidly in popularity. He started recording songs during the mid-1980s in his parents' garage, thus starting Ruthless Records.

In 1987, Wright met with Jerry Heller, a music industry veteran who had represented Elton John, Marvin Gaye and others. The original idea for Ruthless Records came when Wright asked Heller to go into business with him. Wright suggested a half-ownership company, but it was later decided that Wright would get eighty percent of the company's net income and Heller would only get twenty percent. According to Heller, he told Wright, "Every dollar comes into Ruthless, I take twenty cents. That's industry standard for a manager of my caliber. I take twenty, you take eighty percent. I am responsible for my expenses and you're responsible for yours. You own the company. I work for you." Along with Heller, Wright invested much of his money into Ruthless Records. Heller claims that he invested the first $250,000 and would eventually put up to $1,000,000 into the company.[

Before she moved to the UK from Norway to pursue a career in music, Anna Lena Bruland’s grandfather - a renowned conductor who travelled the world with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1950s and 60s - used to warn her against becoming a musician. “He had five sons and they were all very musically talented,” remembers Anna Lena, “but they all grew up to be doctors and vets and bankers because my grandfather always told them, ‘Never become a musician. It’s too hard.’ He wouldn’t allow it.”

His granddaughter, however, wasn’t so easily deterred. “People sometimes ask, 'Why did you decide to become a musician?', but I've never sat down and decided that. It's just something that you need to get out and share with the world. I had to be a musician because there's nothing else I could do."

Loukeman is a Toronto-based producer, DJ, and songwriter. His music pulls from folk, pop, rap, and R&B songs into warped yet familiar forms. His latest album, Sd-2 — the second of a planned trilogy- continues to display his range as one of the most exciting producers in recent years. With a forthcoming album in 2026, he’s also caught the attention of several pop acts as a producer and co-writer. He has shared stages with some of the biggest artists in dance music, and his sets offer an eclectic mix of uptempo arrangements and almost entirely Loukeman productions.

MRD, the project of Norwegian producer Kent Tonning, first arrived on the scene with his debut project, R.O.T, cultivating a core group of fans intoxicated by his willingness to bend all genres of music towards his punk, electronic, and industrial-informed childhood favorites. In 2019, his sound expanded with tracks like house thriller “Matter of Time and “Superwoman”, as well as EPs such as 2020’s FLOWERS OF FLESH AND BLOOD. In 2023, he ushered in his latest era with the release of his Narciss collab, “Midsommar” and teamed up with innovative dance label Live From Earth to share full-length project Løvehjerte. Now, after joining forces with Artemas for an official remix of hit track “i like the way you kiss me”, he’s eager to follow that effort up with his forthcoming EP Misled Youth — out November 20th via Live From Earth in conjunction with Diplo-founded label Mad Decent.

eera.jpg

Eera’s sound, an era’s echo — where a subtle yet unmistakable digital hum arises, shaped by both the pulse of the internet and the flow of his emotions. Nodding to the gamers in the crowd, Eera’s video game visuals during his set last month at Melkweg carried a nostalgic charm, amplifying the immersive pull of his already captivating soundscape (My uneducated guess is Zelda???). As a producer, DJ, and co-founder of the label-meets-collective Surf Gang, Eera’s influence transcends just the music itself — his imprint has reshaped what it means to be an artist in our digital age. The story of Surf Gang began in 2018 with a chance encounter in a New York studio, where the three founding fathers — Eera, Evilgiane, and Harrison — crossed paths for the first time. As their shared vision took shape, the group quickly transformed into the driving force behind a nationwide phenomenon. Speed-running their way from underground collective to contributing to major productions for artists like Kendrick Lamar, PinkPantheress, Valee and Black Kray.

Eera’s production credits equally span a wide spectrum of talent, from Bladee to Babyxsosa. With such a foundation, his future in music production and the collective he’s nurtured is one of innovation and boundless potential. We had the chance to catch him backstage on his European tour with Surf Gang signees Snow Strippers, where he broke down the formative moments of his career and took us deep into the iceberg of niche music.

Let Me Love You · Christian Burns · Mark Novas Waking Up in a Northern Town

0025951710_25.jpg

Christian Anthony Burns (born 18 January 1974) is an English singer. He is the son of Tony Burns of the Signs, a Liverpool-based rock band signed to Decca Records in the 1960s. Burns was a member of the popular British band BBMak, along with Mark Barry and Stephen McNally. The group sold nearly three million albums worldwide and had a top 5 single with "Back Here", in the UK. After BBMak disbanded, Burns began experimenting with a more electronic-leaning sound, blending synth-driven production with the melodic instincts he had honed writing on acoustic guitar. That evolution soon led him into the world of dance music, where a chance discovery of his music online by Tiësto opened the door to a new creative path. Their collaboration on “In The Dark” became a global trance anthem and marked the beginning of Burns’ second act as one of the genre’s most recognizable voices. Over the years, Burns has continued to bring his signature emotional depth to collaborations with artists such as Armin van Buuren, BT, Cosmic Gate, Benny Benassi and Paul van Dyk, delivering timeless vocal performances on tracks like “This Light Between Us.” Now, with a new album, Waking Up in a Northern Town, on the horizon, Burns is once again reflecting on the personal and musical journey that has shaped his sound — from writing songs alone in northern England to crafting music that continues to resonate across dancefloors around the world.

Danelle Sandoval was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 2, 1991, and grew up in a Filipino-American household deeply immersed in music and cultural traditions. Her Filipino mother played a pivotal role in her early exposure to music, introducing her to Filipino songs and artists that sparked her creative interests from a young age. This heritage fostered a strong sense of cultural identity, with family gatherings often centered around singing karaoke and watching classic music videos by icons like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. From childhood, Sandoval was surrounded by a vibrant musical environment in her Filipino family, where singing together became a cherished ritual that influenced her soulful vocal style. She began writing poetry and songs around the age of 10, drawing inspiration from these familial influences and the emotional depth of the music she heard at home. By age 12, she picked up the guitar, using it to compose her early original pieces and further develop her songwriting skills. Sandoval's initial forays into music sharing occurred through online platforms, where she posted cover songs on YouTube, honing her artistry before pursuing professional opportunities. This period of self-directed exploration laid the foundation for her transition to formal academic pursuits.

Hi, I’m Melody, also known as MelodyTheSuperstar — a singer, songwriter, and creator who lives and breathes music. I’m known for my catchy topline melodies, creative concepts, and vocal arrangements that blend emotion with energy. My work has been featured on Netflix, TV One (Miss Me This Christmas), The CW (All American: Homecoming), and most recently, on the CBS/Paramount daytime series Beyond the Gates, a new all-Black cast soap opera.

I’m especially excited about my recent collaboration with Reels, where I released two new sounds — “Sodalicious,” which is close to hitting one million views on Instagram, and “Pink Confetti,” which was featured in a Virgin Voyages commercial.

Over the years, I’ve written for incredible artists like Mýa, Alex Marley, Famous Dex, Mavado, Alkaline, and Inas X, and have even submitted songs for Beyoncé, Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson, and Teyana Taylor.

What makes my journey unique is that I create from a place of purpose — every melody I write carries a piece of my story, and every collaboration reminds me that music truly has no limits. Right now, I’m focused on expanding my creative reach through sync licensing and collaborations that push culture forward and bring joy to new audiences. If I knew I had 10 years left, I’d stop wasting time — completely. I’ve already started doing this since my son was born. I’m finally doing all the things I said I would, one by one. I want him to see what it looks like to finish what you start and to launch the ideas placed in your heart — because they were given to you for a reason. I guess you could call me a serial entrepreneur, but really, I’m just someone who’s done waiting to live out her purpose.

In the 1980s, Shakur's mother found it difficult to find work and struggled with drug addiction. In 1984, his family moved from New York City to Baltimore, Maryland. Beginning in 1984, when Shakur was 13, he lived in the Pen Lucy neighborhood with his mother and younger sister at 3955 Greenmount Ave. The home was a two-story rowhouse that had been subdivided into two separate rental units; the Shakur family lived on the first floor. After his death, the block was renamed Tupac Shakur Way.

In 2006, on the 10th anniversary of Tupac Shakur's death, his ashes were moved to Soweto. Shakur's mother Afeni transported them to the "birthplace of his ancestors" and conducted a memorial service in what's considered as one of the most renowned South African townships. Afeni Shakur explained that Soweto had been selected due to its significance as the "birthplace of the South African struggle for democracy and against apartheid." The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality donated a five-acre plot of undeveloped land in the Zola area of Soweto to build a memorial honoring Shakur. A portion of the land was designated to be transformed into a park for the benefit of local children as well as aimed at promoting environmental education, pathways, orphanages, bridges, skateboard ramps and a golf range while plans also included the construction of an amphitheater and a museum showcasing South African music and arts. The project was funded by Johannesburg city authorities and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation. The memorial was hosted by South African musician and actor Zola 7. Singer Macy Gray and members of the Outlawz were amongst the attendees who paid their respects.

A pioneer of West Coast hip-hop, Shaw was among the first acts to receive recognition in the genre during the late 1980s. His lyrics were often based on pimping and promiscuity, but also drug culture and street survival; exemplified respectively in his most popular singles "Blow the Whistle" and "The Ghetto". He is one of few acts to have worked with both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. at the heights of their respective careers.

The Dream Eaters are an American indie art-pop duo formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2015. The band consists of vocalists Elizabeth LeBaron and Jake Zavracky. While initially recognized for their atmospheric dream pop sound, the project has evolved into a multimedia video art project known for its dark, surrealist humour and "noir-pop" aesthetic.

The Dream Eaters was formed after Elizabeth LeBaron (originally from Calgary, Canada) and Jake Zavracky (a veteran of the Boston and NYC music scenes) met while working as bartenders in the Gowanus neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Zavracky had previously fronted the hard rock band Quick Fix and the synth-pop project The Cyanide Valentine.

The duo briefly performed under the name "Jake and Elizabeth" before adopting the moniker The Dream Eaters. They released their debut EP, Five Little Pills, in 2016, which established their signature style of ethereal vocal harmonies layered over minimalist production.
