The world that Sam Quealy has cultivated within her music is one that is acutely aware that the end of the world is near, yet too intoxicated to care. With tracks like “Follow the Night” and “Nightshade”, it’s easy to imagine Sam’s world as a place where sunglasses are worn into the early hours of the morning and rumors of the apocalypse turn distinctly erotic. They say there is calm at the center of the tornado. As we enter the center of Sam’s storm however, we find a glimpse of freedom and empowerment.

In many ways, Sam represents the collective mindset of a generation that has come of age in an increasingly unstable world. Simultaneously nihilistic and relentlessly hopeful, the kids hip enough to get an invite to Sam’s party are determined to make the most of what little life there is left. In today’s political and social climate, the dance floor can provide us with an escape from the ever-present anxiety that surrounds our everyday life. Her music and live performances pendulate between self-assured bubblegum pop anthems and driving, sexuality-infused techno. It’s clear that Sam, having grown up inside of the club herself, is influenced by the iconic club rats that came before her and knows how powerful a strong beat and a “I’m THAT bitch” attitude can be.

I’ve been writing music since I was a little kid, like eight years old. I had my first band in the third grade and I remember we would play songs we wrote at our lemonade stand on the street corner. I remember telling people that when I grew up, I wanted to be a singer and songwriter, I think it’s really cool that my childhood dream never changed. I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island and was very involved in the theatre scene. Theatre is very close to my heart, and I think it shows in my music and the music videos that will soon be released! For middle school and high school, I attended a prep school. I had a hard time at a place that was so rigid with their learning style. A lot of the kids weren’t kind to me about having a passion for music or having any differences at all.

I’m a singer/songwriter. Within my group of co-writers, I’m known as the “queen of melodies” because I get into the studio and I never stop coming up with ideas that top what we already wrote. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced writer’s block, my brain just never stops creating. It can be quite exhausting but I know it’s what I’m best at. Being the artist/singer is the other side of it. I feel most free and myself when I’m on the stage. The most insane moment I’ve ever had on a stage was performing at the Boston Women’s March in 2017. Anyone who went knew how incredible the energy felt. I realized that being able to use my art and voice to encourage, heal, and uplift is what’s most amazing about what I do. It’s become apparent during the pandemic how essential art really is in our lives. Concerts, funny videos, shopping mall displays, museums, music you can feel your feelings to… Having a lot of that art taken away made the world feel so empty, it reminded me why it’s so important to keep making it. It was really jarring to be mid-tour in March and go from sweaty bodies, lights, and a new city every night to complete isolation.

Off The Menu is a trio band that seeks to create music that transcends various genres, like a buffet catering to different audiences. After entering the indie music scene in 2019, they released their first EP ‘Contact’ in 2020. Like the title suggests, the band wishes for their music to connect with their listeners emotionally and spiritually.

As all three members had previously stayed in the States when they were younger, you will find that many of their songs are written in English apart from Korean lyrics. They explain that some Korean phrases sometimes do not stick to the melodies as smoothly as English words do. Nonetheless, the combination of English and Korean lyrics with sweet melodies might be a good way for them to gain international traction soon.

Lyrics

Runaway from the madness

Diving deep in the silence

Your eyes are bleeding with diamonds

Hey, I think I might be throwing it out

I’ll find a way to keep you away from all this pain

Take it all down to my grave

What are you on?

I think I might be losing my mind

I took my soul and gave it away

I think I might have sold it all out

Runaway from the madness

You showed no mercy or violence to my heart

Diving deep in the silence

Your eyes are bleeding with diamonds

it’s all my fault

Just hand me the sleeping pills

You’ll fall right back into my arms again

Our love is a sleeping pill

You’ll never wake up from this lucid dream

What are you on?

I think I might be losing my mind

I took my soul and gave it away

I think I might have sold it all out

You still mad at me, girl, you wildin’

I still think that it’s your surroundings

You and I are two different islands

You can tell me to leave I don’t mind it

Runaway from the madness

You showed no mercy or violence to my heart

Diving deep in the silence

Your eyes are bleeding with diamonds

it’s all my fault

Just hand me the sleeping pills

You’ll fall right back into my arms again

Our love is a sleeping pill

Re:Axis

Italian DJ and electronic music producer born in 1987 in Sardinia, based in Berlin.

Creating sonic bridges from the literal, perceivable world into mythical, imaginal realms is what Sardinian-born and Berlin-based DJ and Producer Claudio PRC might be best known for. Since appearing in the Italian deep techno scene in 2006, he has developed an immersive sound world inspired by a fascination with Detroit techno and electroacoustics. By studying Music and New Technologies, he gained sonic and tonal combination skills - this, paired with a conscious, philosophical approach, has led him to create a distinct sound. A sound that understands electronic music through a cyclical, cosmic lens. Instead of using extravertive elements, he enhances the overall experience through a wide-screen appeal, playing with spatial awareness through details and taking the audience on a journey into the all-or-nothing of sound. Following the first album “Inner State” on Prologue Music in 2012, Claudio released long players on Semantica Records and his co-founded label, TGP (The Gods Planet). An undeniably profound connection to the island of Sardinia is palpable in all of his works. It surfaces through the relationship with his home base collective Basstation in Cagliari or the appearance of oceanic references in his music like in his most recent, well-received EP “Challenger Deep” on the dutch label Delsin Records (2022). In 2020, Claudio founded 012, a platform for art and sound research. 012 is a canvas to live the unconstrained and interconnected nature of artistic vision. Next to being a label showcasing collaborative work, it is also a curated night held at several clubs across Europe. Collaborations include closely connected artists such as Luigi Tozzi or, more recently, Blazej Malinowski. Over the years, he created a flourishing ecosystem of artists and producers and invites them to join 012 or to his ambient-explorative radio show Deepartment. The combination of audio and visual experiences is as important as the connection between the real and the imaginal in Claudio’s work. One apparent example was his performance “From the nebular stars to the mosses on the granite rocks” during Berlin Art Week in 2015. Like in everything he does, a Claudio PRC DJ set is a meticulously sewn journey. This makes him a key protagonist in the emerging world of hypnotic techno, playing regularly at an international level at the most reputable festivals and clubs. From 2023 on Claudio PRC is holding a residency at Berlin’s long-standing Techno institution Tresor.

José Diogo Correia aka Re:Axis started his journey in sound at young age, perceiving the vibrations from acoustic and electronic instruments as a tool to create space and travel within. He has released music and toured the world since 2006. It was the year he set the love intentions to share, connect and get inspired through energy and frequencies. All the experience and maturity acquired over the past makes him a unique artist of the dance music scene.

Tanukichi is a Japanese DJ and producer whose career now spans two decades at the forefront of European free party and rave culture. Known for his constant drive to evolve, he has become a respected connector between Japanese and European underground scenes, building his reputation on powerful sound design, physical low-end, and a sharp understanding of dancefloor dynamics.

His productions focus on heavy kick drums, dominant basslines, and steady, propulsive rhythms.

Recently, Tanukichi has pushed this framework further, developing a high-powered approach built around four kicks and a 175 BPM tempo, creating music designed for large systems, festivals, and the new generation of drum and bass listeners.

Following the release of Higher with Mandidextrous on Ram Records in 2023, Tanukichi entered drum and bass with total focus and long-term vision. Within only his third year working intensively in the genre, he has earned recognition for merging rave-rooted energy with contemporary DNB structures. This rapid progression reflects nearly twenty years of experience and a rare ability to adapt without losing identity.

His connection to Europe’s free party culture began in 2006 after a formative Teknival experience in Japan, shaping the communal, uncompromising spirit that still defines his work. Over time, he became a prominent figure in European Hardtek while strengthening links between Japanese and international rave scenes. Today, Tanukichi occupies a growing space between the drum and bass and tekno communities, acting as a conduit between scenes driven by sound system culture and forward-thinking music.

Whether the crowd comes from drum and bass, hardtek, or wider rave culture, his sets are built to connect, move, and energize. Blending high-energy rave music with heavyweight bass culture, Tanukichi is carving a clear role in the evolution of modern dance music.

A regular presence at major festivals across Europe and Japan, Tanukichi has performed at Boomtown and Glastonbury in the UK, Fuji Rock in Japan, Defqon.1 in the Netherlands, Electrobotik Invasion and Reperkusound in France, Selvatek in Spain, and Beats for Love Festival and X-Massacre in the Czech Republic.

With twenty years behind him and a fast-rising profile in drum and bass, Tanukichi stands as one of the most exciting crossover figures in contemporary global bass culture.

Floxytek’s childhood was spent between the South of France and the Normandy beaches listening to the cutting beat of hip hop. Then, he discovered the everlasting repetitive sound of tekno and became addicted to it. In 2003 he created with close friends his own crew ‘Marsatek’ and began to play and spread the hard beat of tekno in free parties. One year later he signed his first production on LP Moloko 04.

The ‘Teklicit Marsatek’ label emerged in 2007 and the ‘Teknical Vodka’ series was created.

Floxytek is one of the major artists in the Hardtek scene. Over the past decade, he’s been touring all over Europe, alone or with his crew, and delivering beats at some famous festival like Boomtown Fair, The End Of The World, Reperkusound, Dreambeach, Insane Festival…

Floxytek is also part of the Fant4stik project created in 2014 with Billx, Mat WB and Guigoo. Always trying to push the musical boundaries, he also started playing progressive psytrance with Billx under the alias Moontrackers created in 2015.

The elusive German producer known as Traumprinz has unveiled ‘Lost In Dreams‘, the first ever physical release under the alias Irini. Issued via All Possible Worlds / Réunion, the project arrives as a lavish six-vinyl box set paired with a high-resolution digital download, cementing a body of work that has lived in myth since its first appearance four years ago.

Back in September 2021, a three-hour Soundcloud mix surfaced without warning under the name Irini – Lost In Dreams. Spanning more than twenty tracks, it was less a traditional DJ set than a drifting collage of ambient passages, broken rhythms and euphoric surges. Henry Ivry at Resident Advisor described it as a “shapeshifting narrative” that blurred the line between club functionality and private reverie. Since then, fans have speculated whether the material would ever take a more permanent form.

That moment has now arrived. Lost In Dreams box set contains thirty seven tracks spread across six records. Together they sketch out a world both intimate and expansive, where trance-like arpeggios dissolve into weightless ambient textures, and moments of melancholy give way to flashes of ecstatic release.

In an era dominated by streaming, Traumprinz’s decision to anchor Irini in a tactile format feels like a statement of intent: this is music to be lived with, not merely consumed. Just as important is what the release signals for the artist’s mythology. Traumprinz has long been associated with aliases – Prince Of Denmark, DJ Metatron, Prime Minister Of Doom – each carving out a distinct space in an interconnected universe.

With Irini, that universe extends further, offering a more dream-focused counterpart to the producer’s already expansive catalogue. Four years after the alias was first glimpsed, Lost In Dreams provides its physical foundation.

‘Lost In Dreams’ is scheduled for release on 28 October. Order the box set from Bandcamp.

Anatomy_of_our_Sun_pillars.jpg

Core
This is where the Sun generates its energy. The temperature in the core is around 15 million degrees Celsius. This, combined with the huge pressure and density of the plasma force hydrogen nuclei to fuse together, creating helium and releasing vast quantities of energy in the process. Every second, the Sun converts four million tonnes of matter into energy in this way, which begins a slow journey towards the surface.

Radiative zone
This is the layer above the core. Although not as dense as the core, the plasma is still packed so tightly in the radiative zone that convection cannot take place. Instead, the energy created in the core diffuses slowly through the plasma. It takes photons around 170 000 years to pass through the radiative zone: The photons travel at the speed of light, but can travel only a few millimetres at a time before they are absorbed by an atom and then re-emitted in any direction. At the top of the zone, the temperature is around two million degrees Celsius. At the base, next to the Sun’s core, the temperature is around seven million degrees Celsius.

Convective zone
This lies between the deeper, radiative zone and the photosphere. While the top layer is the same temperature as the photosphere (between 4500–6000 °C), the base of the convective zone reaches two million degrees Celsius. Plasma at the base of the zone is heated rapidly. This makes it buoyant and so it rises rapidly, creating a turbulent convection pattern, rather like a boiling pan of water – only 200 000 km deep and surrounding the entire Sun.

Tachocline
This is the boundary between the convective zone and the radiative zone. Below the tachocline, the Sun rotates like a solid body. Above it, the Sun rotates at different speeds according to its latitude. The change of rotation speed across the tachocline is very fast and this results in shearing forces that are thought to be important in the creation of the magnetic fields that lead to sunspots.

Photosphere
This is the visible ‘surface’ of the Sun. Almost all radiation from the Sun is emitted from this thin layer of several 100 km thickness, which lies at the upper boundary of the convection zone. It is where the energy generated in the core can finally move freely through space. The temperature of the photosphere varies from place to place but lies between 4500 and 6000 °C.

Chromosphere
This is the layer above the photosphere, where the density of plasma drops dramatically. In general, the chromosphere is roughly 1000–2000 km thick, with a temperature that rises from around 4000 to about 25 000 °C. Spires of chromospheric gas, known as spicules, can reach up to a height of 10 000 km.

Transition region
This is a thin, irregular layer that separates the relatively cool chromosphere from the much hotter corona. Across the transition zone, the temperature of the solar plasma soars to nearly a million degrees Celsius. While the convection zone and partly also the solar photosphere are dominated by flows which are capable of moving regions of strong magnetic flux around, the transition region and corona are dominated by the magnetic field which forces the plasma to move predominantly along field lines.

Corona
This is the Sun’s outer atmosphere and extends to millions of kilometres into outer space. It is most easily seen during a total solar eclipse. The plasma in the corona is extremely hot at more than a million degrees Celsius, yet is very rarefied. Its density is typically just one trillionth of the density of the photosphere. The solar wind originates in the corona.

Prominence
These are large structures, often thousands of kilometres in extent. They are made of tangled magnetic field lines that keep dense concentrations of solar plasma suspended above the Sun’s surface and often take the form of loops that arch up from the chromosphere. They can persist for several weeks or even months.

Solar flare
This is a sudden release of energy. A flare is usually created when the magnetic field lines that make sunspots transform themselves rapidly into more stable configurations. This is a bit like a stretched elastic band breaking and releasing all of its stored energy as it snaps back into position. The energy released by solar flares strongly influences the behaviour of the solar wind.

Sunspots
These are temporary features on the photosphere. They look like dark patches against the brighter region of the photosphere because they about 1000 degrees cooler and so do not emit so much light. They are caused by magnetic fields breaking through the photosphere of the Sun and cooling the gas there. Sunspots can be anything from a few tens of kilometres across to larger than 150 000 km.

Granulation
These are convective patterns that occur in the photosphere. Each granule is about 1000 km wide and consists of hot plasma rising in its centre. As it releases its energy into space, the plasma cools and this makes it flow to the sides of the granule and sink back down into the photosphere. Individual granules persist for about 20 minutes, after this new ones in slightly different places develop.

Coronal mass ejections
These are vast eruptions of billions of tonnes of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun's corona. They travel out from the Sun at speeds of hundreds to thousands of kilometres per second, and if sent into the pathway of the Earth, can create geomagnetic storms.   CREDIT ESA

Biography

Monster Rally is the brainchild of Cleveland native Ted Feighan. Producing music that is sampled-based tropical pop, Monster Rally began with the goal of assembling a bunch of old records into a completely different beast. Feighan began crafting tracks from his collection of records, combining his interests in Hip-hop, Exotica, Tropicalia, and Soul. Monster Rally creates tracks that manage to maintain a surprisingly organic sound, as if they were recorded by a full band on analog tape. There is something inherently nostalgic about the sound.

Across nine tracks, 2charm bottle up the rush of queer desire, spiritualised partying, Euro summer escapism, and the strange magnetism of the people and places that reshape you. They melodise about queer love suffocating on small-town streets before being reborn in ecstasy beneath the blinding strobe lights of European clubs.

Inspired by the EDM sleaze of deadmau5, SOPHIE, Skrillex and Zedd, and created alongside collaborators Ninajirachi, 1tbsp and Simon Lam (Kllo, Armlock), star scum city feels worlds away from growing pains and uncertainty. It captures a self-assured escape to the big city, a newfound selfhood that booms with glittering confidence.

As 2charm come off the back of sold-out local shows and set their sights on the US and Europe, they tell Rolling Stone AU/NZ about the making of star scum city, the ideas behind their self-described ‘gooner pop’, and the community that fuels their shimmering, slightly grimy universe.

Phase 2 · Shinichi Atobe - Silent Way

Elusive Japanese producer Shinichi Atobe's sound has evolved from abstract, dubby minimal techno to brighter, more melodic deep house. Originally appearing in 2001 with an EP on cult dub techno label Chain Reaction, the artist had disappeared for over a decade when British duo Demdike Stare convinced him to release further material. Atobe's debut full-length, Butterfly Effect, was issued to much acclaim in 2014, and he continued releasing albums, including warmer, sunnier efforts like 2018's Heat and 2022's Love of Plastic. In 2001, techno producer Shinichi Atobe issued the Ship-Scope EP, the 34th of Chain Reaction's 35 12" releases. It arrived that December with minimal fanfare, as was standard for the Berlin-based label, but the tracks "Plug and Delay" and "The Red Line" were eventually recognized for being among dub techno's top tier. Demand was greater than supply. Copies subsequently changed hands for triple-digit U.S. dollar amounts.

Dungeon Synth is a subgenre unlike anything heard in metal. Coming into prominence in the 90’s, the music style showcased a fusion of electronic, black metal and dark ambient. With the continuing rise of gaming in both video games and table-top RPGs, dungeon synth has been the soundtrack of many created worlds, with many gifted artists from all over the world leaving their own musical impression on the genre.

Warlock Corpse, also known as Труп Колдуна [Nikita] is a dungeon synth artist from Kazakhstan. He is an artist taking the old school approach to creating dungeon synth. We talked about inspiration, working with vintage synthesizers and collaborating with other artists.

I’ve been making music for a long time, and in the past, I played in other genres, mostly post-punk and no wave with dark elements. I used to make pre-show playlists to play before concerts when people were gathering in the venue. I was searching for non-rhythmic music, like dark ambient and dungeon synth. While putting together those playlists, I grew to love dungeon synth and decided to record something in that style. That’s how my first release, Returning to the Dungeons, was born. I love vintage synthesizers because they give that raw, authentic sound I aim for in Warlock Corpse tracks. The only challenge is dealing with all the cables needed to connect them and the space they take up, but for me, that’s not really a problem.
